He held a number of positions in the first ten years of working with Martin’s including dairy manager, grocery manager, assistant store manager, and now store manager. What kept Hack in the food retail industry was the company he worked for. “We are an independently family owned business and the beliefs and values of Martin himself have been handed down through the family. I get to work with a great group of people.”

When he was selected to be a finalist in the FMI Store Manager Awards in 2014, Hack said he was very proud to even be nominated. “I was also lucky to have another one of our store managers selected for the award,” he said.

Hack was welcomed home with balloons and streamers in his office, congratulatory décor his co-workers put together. “The employees and customers made me feel so special,” Hack said. Their local newspaper, the Granger Gazette, ran an article congratulating Hack for receiving the award. “I also received a very nice plaque from the Granger Business Association.”

This year, Hack is celebrating his forty eighth year in the business. “I feel honored to have been chosen for this award, especially since I plan on retiring in the near future,” he said. Since winning the award, there have been significant changes in Hack’s store and within the community. “We have added a new department in our store and are also undergoing major renovations at our location,” he said.

This past October, Martin’s hosted a “Haunted Hayride” to help fund the Saint Joseph County Police’s D.A.R.E program. With over 1,500 people in attendance, they received large contributions to add to their program. “There have been many more events that we have supported to raise money for non-profit organizations,” Hack said.

Know a grocery store manager like Larry Hack? Nominate them for FMI’s Store Manager Awards by March 14!
