More recently, it has meant fulfilling personal health and nutrition needs. The notion of eating well today comprises a balance of multifaceted needs, pleasures and values. It’s more about connecting with food, exploring it, and thinking about its impacts.

While eating well is still anchored in health, it’s now joined by desires for taste and enjoyment, discovery, and mindful connection. This year’s U.S. Grocery Shopper Trends explores the concept of eating well at length.

In Trends, FMI interviewed consumers about what eating well means to them. Here are some ways they define it:

"Consuming a balanced meal that leaves me feeling content, having spent time with my family and support local producers of my food"

“Tastes good and filling, but not overeating.”

"That I am eating fresh vegetables and fruit, drinking plenty of filtered water and eating lean meats which have not been treated with hormones and antibiotics"

We see in these quotes a tremendous variety in what eating well means on a personal level. For many, it falls within health and nutrition goals, for others it’s taste and enjoyment, while budget often overlaps as a consideration point. In addition, eating well encompasses a sense of emotional wellbeing like spending time with family, as well as, social considerations like supporting foods produced in a sustainable way.

For a deeper dive, click here to view our second Trends webinar, in which we explore in more detail this concept of consumers’ desire to “eat well” and strive to answer these important questions for the food retail industry.

Download U.S. Grocery Shopping Trends
